Newport News, VA – It was Senior Day for the Apprentice Women's Basketball team, as they honored their PG, Brittney Jones. Today's opponent was Clinton College from South Carolina, who is one of the top teams in the USCAA. It would be a difficult challenge for the Builders, but the last time these two teams played, Apprentice almost was able to pull off the upset. With the crowd ready to go and celebrate Jones, Coach Hill and her team wanted to send them home happy.
Clinton struck right away with a 3-pointer to start the first quarter, but Nyla Jackson answered with a deep 3-pointer of her own, which sparked the Builders to run out an early 8-3 advantage. However, the Golden Bears would fight their way back and with 2:09 remaining, they jumped in front by a score of 17-15. They would increase their lead to 4-points, and as the quarter ended Apprentice, trailed by a score of 23-15.
The second quarter saw Clinton add to their lead through defensive stops, which they were able to turn into points. The Builders found themselves down by double digits and then a technical foul on Nyla Jackson, which was also her 4th foul of the game, allowed the lead to stretch to 12-points. A fast break layup by Brittney Jones cut the lead to 10-points and that was followed by a basket down low from Jordan Wilson, trimmed the lead to single digits. However, the Golden Bears put together 7 straight points to increase their lead to 38-23 and that would remain the score as both teams headed to the locker rooms.
As the third quarter began, Clinton pushed their lead to 17 points, before Jordan Wilson and Ashawnti Williams combined for 3 out 4 free throws. Unfortunately, that is as close as Apprentice would get as the Golden Bears began a 13-0 run to push their lead to 54-27. The Builders were able to get back to free throw line, but Clinton would get back up by 27-points and end the quarter leading 59-32.
The fourth quarter was a struggle for Apprentice as they could not get anything going on the offensive end of the court. Mid-way through they found themselves trailing by 35-points even though they continued to pressure the ball and attack the basket. Unfortunately, the Builders could cut into the lead and as the horn sounded, they fell by a final score of 80-43.
Jordan Wilson led Apprentice on the day finishing with 15 points while going 9-12 from the Free Throw line. Ashawnti Williams added 11 points and grabbed a game high 16 rebounds, while Brittney Jones finished her Senior Day with 6 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. The Builders will be back in action tomorrow, as they welcome in Johnson & Wales for the second game of a doubleheader. Tip=off is scheduled for 2:00pm.
