Newport News, VA – In a rematch from a few weeks ago, the Apprentice Women's Basketball team, once again, welcomed in crosstown EMAC foe Regent University.  The Builders came away with the win in the last meeting and were looking to do the same tonight.  This game would have a lot of meaning for Coach Hill and her team.  If Apprentice could find a way to control the tempo and come away victorious, they would be awarded a home game in the first round of the EMAC tournament next week.

The Builders came out with a defensive stop to start the first quarter but were unable to capitalize on their first offensive possession.  The Royals took advantage of that and drained a 3-pointer to take the early lead, 3-0.  After going down by 5-points, Jordan Wilson got Apprentice on the board by converting 2 free throws.  After a Regent turnover, NeOndra Kelly pulled them to within 1-point, after hitting a short jumper from the wing and Nyla Jackson would give them their first lead of the game after draining two 3-pointers from the top of the key, forcing the Royals to call a time out.  Out of the timeout, Kelly kept the run going as she put Apprentice ahead, 12-5 and then Jordan Wilson proceeded to hit two free throws for the 9-point advantage.  They would keep up the pressure and as the quarter came to an end the Builders held the 11-point advantage, 16-5.

The second quarter started off slow as both teams were unable to find the basket.  Coach Hill called an early timeout to get things back and track.  Unfortunately, it was Regent who would strike first with a 3-pointer, but Kerrigan Smalls made her presence know, pushing the lead back to 10-points.  NeOndra Kelly continued to have a positive spark offensively, and with 4:07 remaining in the half, Apprentice remained ahead by 10-points, 20-10.  The Royals began to go on a run, trimming the lead to 4-points, and as the half came to a close, they cut it to 2-points, with the Builders heading into the locker with the small advantage, 20-18.

Regent tied the game up to begin the third quarter, but Ashawnti Williams and Brittney Jones put Apprentice back out in front by 4-points, and then Jones pushed it to 6-points after being fouled on a layup.  The next 3 minutes would see both teams getting stops but it was the Builders who managed to keep the advantage and then take a double-digit lead after a Kerrigan Smalls 3-pointer from the baseline.  That lead got as high as 13-points after a number of made free throws and Apprentice would close out the quarter leading 37-24.

The fourth quarter saw Alena Puaauli-Pelham take a turnover for a fast break layup and then the Builders began to slow down the tempo on offense.  The Royals would chip away at the lead, getting it to single digits, 39-30.  However, that did not last long as Kerrigan Small and Alena Puaauli-Pelham each found the basket to put Apprentice ahead 43-30.  They would remain ahead and as the final horn sounded, the Builders would come away with the win by a final score of 50-38.

Apprentice was led on the night by Jordan Wilson who put up a double-double, finishing with 12 points and 11 rebounds.  She would also go 8-11 from the free throw line.  Brittney Jones also had a strong game, added 11 points, while grabbing 7 rebounds.  Next up for the Builders will be a Saturday home game against Clinton College.  All fans are encouraged to come out as Brittney Jones will be honored on Senior Day.
