The Mid-Atlantic Christian University Men's Basketball team opened EMAC conference play at home Tuesday evening with a thrilling 50-49 win over Regent University.
A defensive battle from the start the Mustangs would fall behind early before seizing control of the first half with a suffocating defense that would limit the Royals to just 7 made field goals. The second half would be more of the same as both teams struggled to score throughout the half. A late run would see the Mustangs jump out to a 9 point lead with just under 3 minutes to play.
A pair of converted and-1 opportunities by Hammack-Fitzgerald and a driving layup by Royals senior Kristopher Smith would see the Mustangs lead cut to just 1 and set up a dramatic finish for the two teams. The Royals would have the ball with 15.1 seconds remaining and holding for the last shot with Mustangs needing one last defensive stop to secure the win. Driving to his left once again, Smith would be blocked by the Mustang's Jahiem Hinton. A scramble for the ball would end with a layup opportunity by Hammack-Fitzgerald rolling off the rim and Mustangs forward Kevin Fletcher ending the threat by securing the loose ball.
In his first start of the season, Marvin Lucky-Roy led the Mustangs with his first career double double registering 11 points and 11 rebounds to go along with 3 steals. Damarius Alexander added 11 points and Fletcher chipped in 10 in the low scoring game. The Royals 6'9 center Damon Hammack-Fitzgerald led all scorers with 14 points.
Men's Basketball returns to action Saturday December 11 as they travel to take on the Bruins of Carolina University in Winston-Salem, NC.
